The Block Island Ferry Fills an Empty Boat
What if there was a cruise on beautiful Narragansett Bay, but nobody came? Well, not exactly nobody – but when fewer than a dozen people took the daily ride from Providence to Newport to Block Island on a boat built for 850, Interstate Navigation realized something needed to be done.
That something was a call to us, and we quickly assessed the problem. While people knew about Interstate’s service to the island from Galilee on the state’s south coast, few realized they could see the island and enjoy a summer day on the bay along the way by leaving from Providence.
Highlighting the family-owned company’s 60th anniversary, we raised the ferry’s profile by offering a free ‘Thank You’ Cruise on the first weekend of the summer service, using PR to spread the word, fill the boat and get the summer off to a great start.
The word got out. In fact, it worked almost too well – on Saturday morning just before the boat left the dock, the crew counted the 842nd passenger, just short of capacity. Not a bad problem to have!
