Pond View Recycling Mends Fences – and Triples in Size

“I tell everybody that I’d be out of business if it weren’t for Dave Preston,” says Ken Foley, president of one of New England’s leading recycling companies.

Foley and the 60 employees of Pond View were within hours of being shut down when he made the call to Preston, beginning a long, hard effort to address the concerns – and opposition – of his hometown by educating decision-makers, opinion leaders and neighbors.

Foley’s ‘Good Neighbor Plan’ told his neighbors about company operations through the media and direct mail. Pond View also invited local residents inside to take a look, hosting a "Big Truck, Little Kid Open House," where neighborhood kids climbed on Pond View’s heavy equipment, while their parents learned about the company’s key role in the regional recycling effort.

Foley walked the walk, too – he conducted regular testing of air, water and noise in and around his facility, and made the results public.

When it was all over, Pond View was not only still running – its application to triple the amount of material the company handled each day was approved by the R.I. Department of Environmental Management.
