What's Your Point?

Our People

David Preston

What’s different about New Harbor?
I want everyone who works here to want to be here, so I make a great effort to make it the best possible work environment.  I’m also determined to show clients the value we bring.  I’m proud to say that we still have our first client --14 years and counting.

What gives you professional satisfaction?
A crisp, clear sentence or phrase that delivers the message.  Getting intellectual and emotional buy-in from a client.  Winning.  Hearing “We should have hired you guys”.

Pet peeve?
Traffic; wasting time; sloppy or indifferent service; spelling errors; not having something to read; losing;  the mindset “Because we’ve always done it that way”.

Did you have a mentor?
I have had several, but the most impactful “mentor” was my four years in the United States Marine Corps.  I saw the world, learned the elements of leadership, took responsibility, learned the effective use of profanity and just plain grew up.  It was one of the smartest things I ever did – I’d do it again in a second and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Any good sayings you still use (that don’t include profanity)?
Many, but the one that stands out was from my commanding officer in Okinawa who used to say “Can’t means won’t.”  It’s so true.  Another good one – “If you’re in, you’re in to win.”

What’s in your I-pod?
Frank, Dino, Andres Segovia, Boston, Chopin

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced you?
“Moneyball” by Michael Lewis.  It shows how smart thinking can be more than a match for a pile of money – or create success even without a pile of money.  It also highlights the benefits of my belief that the conventional wisdom needs to be constantly questioned.
